CREATE A SAFETY PLAN

Many things happen in ours lives but some of those things can  be prepared for. For those trying to escape an abusive relationship, you will need a safety plan to do so. If you are going out camping, you will need a safety plan in case things don't go as planned and even when just living in normal conditions, a safety plan gives us the reassurance we need in case of danger.

WHAT IS A SAFETY PLAN?

A safety plan is a detailed preparation on actions to take in case of danger made in advance in order to maximize the victims safety. Not every safety plan can be the same because each individual is different and so are the situation we may face. may be there situation. 



WHERE AND WHEN CAN A SAFETY PLAN BE USED?

A safety plan may be devised for many different purposes for example when:

  • stopping child abuse 
  • preventing home violence
  • leaving an abuser 
  • working with a bad boss
  • protecting your children
  • saving someone from human trafficking among many other factors.



WHO CREATES A SAFETY PLAN?

Each safety plan is personalized, therefore, it needs to be created by you. This can be done with the help of a professional i.e. some non profit organizations, a social worker or even a trusted friend and family member.


WHAT IS IN A SAFETY PLAN?

Even though each safety plan is different. The following information is generally important in each plan:


  • A plan of action. What does the victim intend to do to escape the danger.
  • Recognize the behavioral patterns of the abuser and from that derive the best way to avoid the danger even if behavior cannot be changed.
  • Determine who is at risk, is it just the victim or others too?
  • Identify the action to increase safety for the victim/s.
  • Alternative shelter in case of danger.
  • Whether to survive the problem or leave the abuser.
  • Evidence of the abuse e.g video or voice recordings, pictures, emails and/or witnesses among others.
  • Emergency contact number.
  • Emergency funds like money or resources.
  • Remember to seek advice when making a safety plan.

HOW LONG IS THE SAFETY PLAN SUPPOSED TO COVER

The plan covers for the long term and not just the escape. Plan for something from 3 months to a year.
