SAFIGI
Foundation is a dynamic body of volunteers and members who are passionate about improving
safety for girls through safety education. We strive to create a world where
girls are empowered, equipped and fulfilled in every aspect of their life, for
the benefit of global development.
We
tap into the power of working open, putting young women in leadership
positions, and strategic collaboration to pursue research, create safety
courses, and execute social campaigns in order to improve safety for girls.
We connect
via the internet to volunteer and build a community of people who are
passionate about improving the safety conditions of girls.
CURRENT SITUATION
9.6 of 10 people believe Safety Education is relevant in today’s
society. 85% of people believe Safety Education is necessary for safer
communities and 77% are confident it is vital in maintaining a healthier
community, while 90% of people believe it is necessary for personal
development. There is a clear need for Safety Education but very little
attention is being paid to it.
Safety Education is the practice of internal and external safety.
Internal safety is peace of mind, heart, and emotions. External safety is the
protection of the body, other person, and environment.
Therefore, In 2017 December, SAFIGI Foundation undertook a
detailed research and data analysis on core issues affecting safety of girls in
the developing world. In this study of at least 300 people in 4 countries, we
found out;
- Only
12% Females had learned about mental health compared to 21% males.
- Only
21% Females had attended some form of physical and/or emotion self-defense
training compared to 37% Males.
- 3
in 10 people do not know where to safely report physical and emotional
abuse.
- 6.5
in 10 people have experience emotional abuse.
- 1
in 3 people have suffered institutional abuse.
- 3
in 7 people suffer physical violence.
- 1
in 5 people are victims of gender based abuse.
- 1
in 6 people face discrimination.

WHAT WE’RE DOING ABOUT IT
SAFIGI
Foundation has identified the lack of awareness and resources available to
tackle the scope of safety issues affecting girls. Through the power of
volunteerism, we are working to bridge that gap in order to advance safety for
girls.
- SAFETY
EDUCATION
Through
workshops, online trainings, and content, we educate girls between the ages of
14 and 25 on practicing internal and external safety. Internal Safety is
attaining peace of mind, heart, and emotions. External Safety is the Protection
of the body, other person, and environment.
- VOLUNTEERISM
We
are a volunteer-based and youth led foundation. We are funded by in-kind
contributions and thrive on passion for a safer world. So far, we have worked
with over 200 volunteers in more than 60 countries. We maintain a 4.9 out of 5
rating on UN Online Volunteers based on responses of over 100 volunteers alone. Apply to Volunteer.
- ACTIVISM
Annually,
since 2014, we host a social campaign toward empowering, educating, and creating
opportunities for women and girls. The activism is done at a grassroots level
and involves girls in creating hands-on projects toward promoting safety,
peace, and equality.
- COMMUNITY
‘SAFIGITribe’ is an online community of women and girls who support each other and
promote inclusive safety. ‘Friends of SAFIGI’ is the community for men and boys
who support a safer world and equality of the genders. Members of SAFIGI tribe
who live within the same community meet offline for safety activities, and
being a member offers opportunities such as mentorship, having a listening ear,
and being available to listen to another person who may otherwise have no one
to speak to. It is about putting to practice internal (mind, heart, emotions)
and external (body, other person, environment) safety.
- PARTNERSHIPS
Being
youth led and volunteer based, SAFIGI relies on partnerships and sponsorship to
host our workshop and distribute our material which is always available for
free. There are many ways we collaborate with different groups including
offering our services, CSR, workshops and events, among more.
- RESEARCH
SAFIGIsresearch focuses on ‘Core Issues Affecting Safety of Girls’. In 2017, we
published a research paper and a data analysis on this concept because we
believe core safety concepts are the same regardless of the region or culture.
Vices affecting safety for girls may vary, however, the root cause is mostly
the same across the board and through our research we examine the extent of
this ideology which we have so far proven to be true and related to internal
and external safety.
